PIN TERMINOLOGY


  This should help the novice talk the talk and walk the walk. If you know the lingo you’re in the game. The following is a pin trading dictionary.

Authorized Pin: An official pin produced by the official licensee

Badge: A pin that identifies the holder’s association, federation or sport

Bid Pin: A pin produced by an Organizing Committee attempting to land the Games.

Commemorative: A souvenir pin that is authorized by the Organizing Committee for those particular games.

Commercial Pin: A pin produced by an Official sponsor of the Olympic Games.

Corporate Pin: A pin produced by an Official sponsor of the Olympic Games.

Counterfeit: Also known as Fake, reproduced illegally and or without authorization or without the official markings on the back of the pin.

Dealer: Anyone who prefers to sell rather than trade.

Exchange: Swap or trade.

Fantasy Pin:
Unauthorized pin produced by an individual not recognized by the Organizing Committee and the majority of collectors.

Federation Pin: Pin produced for or by a sports federation eg. bobsledding, luge, hockey, track and field etc.

Generic: An undated pin (Media, NOC, Sponsor)

Guest Badge: A pin issued to a Sponsor VIP that comes with special perks.

Media Pin: A pin issued by a magazine, newspaper, radio or television network or wire service providing official coverage for the Games.

Meet: A predetermined gathering of traders.

NGB: A pin issued by a National Governing Body. Same as a federation pin.

NOC: A pin that is produced by or for a National Olympic Comittee. EG. Canadian Olympic Committe, US Olympic Committee, British Olympic Comittee. etc.

Pinhead: A pin collector.

Primary Pin: Any Official pin that displays the official logo or emblem of the Organizing Committee for any Olympic Games.

Production Level: The quantity of a specific pin manufactured.

Production Pin: The opposite of a prototype pin.

Prototype: the first pin that was designed but never made it to a larger production. These pins are very rare and definitely a keeper.

Rerun or reissue: An authorized reproduction.

Session Badge: A large pin produce for the IOC Meetings and it identifies the level of participants who attend the meetings.

Show: A formal gathering of traders.

Sponsor Pin: A pin produced by an Official sponsor of the Olympic Games.

Strike: To manufacture a pin.

Swap: Trade or exchange.

Trade: Swap or exchange.

Trader: A pin you have more than one of and you can part with.

Unauthorized Pin: an illegal or counterfeit pin. Stay away from these pins.

Unofficial Pin: A pin that doesn’t have any official marking of either the official pin licensee, the Organizing Committee or Symbols.
